The knowledge-sharing consortium to drive smart city initiatives in Oman - Smart City Platform (SCP) – has launched a digital platform for smart city ambassadors to exchange knowledge and experience and work on different projects in smart cities that fall within their interests.

The goal of SCP is to bring together practitioners, researchers, academics, scholars, students, or any individual interested in Smart City to come together to share and co-create knowledge and the state-of-the-art smart solutions, smart technologies, or analytical-based solutions.

The platform – Professional Initiative for the Ambassadors of Smart City Platform, was launched during the first virtual meeting for the Smart City Ambassadors, with an aim to activate the role of smart city ambassadors in leading smart city projects, embrace and support all the ambassadors in turning their ideas into projects, benefit from the expertise of the existing ambassadors in terms of developing their ideas into projects, utilise the experiences of ambassadors in raising awareness of the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the areas of smart cities.

The platform also encourages ambassadors to develop smart city projects in their own cities, create a competition atmosphere for smart city projects through the affiliation of ambassadors to these smart cities, and leading some projects that serve their own cities, create a database of expert ambassadors through this professional platform, and utilise the expertise of ambassadors for the benefit of the government and private institutions.

As per the Professional Initiative for the Ambassadors of Smart City Platform, all the ambassadors will be available on a digital platform that enables them to get to know each other, share experience and work together on projects. ‘Ambassadors are welcome to submit project ideas where work teams are formed for approved ideas. The SCP will provide the necessary support for all the ideas and projects that will include marketing them through the SCP’s social media accounts,’ a press release said.

According to Said al Ghannami, director of Corporate and Community Communications at the SCP, out of the 3,052 who have registered in the initiative, the SCP has currently 300 ambassadors. The SCP has so far 131 research projects and 6 innovation-based projects, he added.

It is worth mentioning that the Ambassadors of Smart City Platform is a Supreme Council for Planning initiative to cultivate public involvement on smart cities related issues with an aim to establish communities of practice (CoPs). The goal of this initiative is to bring together practitioners, researchers, academics, scholars, students, or any individual interested in Smart City to come together to share and co-create knowledge and state-of-the-art smart solutions, smart technologies, or analytical-based solutions.

Smart Cities are cities that utilise Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) such as Big data, Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and others. In order to innovate new solutions to enhance the quality of life of inhabitants of the city. Smart cities are overarching many verticals, such as transportation, tourism, energy, health, environment, governance, and others.
